Richard Middlemiss

Richard moved to the island with his family aged 11, and grew up on a croft in the Lochs area of Lewis. He spent his teenage years doing all of the outdoor pursuits he could; lucky to live within such a beautiful playground for these activities.

After school, Richard spent 15 years at Glasgow University. Firstly studying astrophysics as a student and postgraduate, and ultimately working as a lecturer in physics/engineering leading his own research group. His team specialised in developing miniature sensors for predicting volcanic eruptions.

Academia and city-living were great fun, but Richard and his young family felt the call of the wilds, returning to Lewis for a calmer lifestyle in 2022. He now tends the family croft (where he’s building a house for his family), runs a holiday let business, and is back to spending as much time as possible sailing, hiking, camping and kayaking; exploring both the landscape and history of these beautiful islands. He would love to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors to the Hebrides.
