Esther Williams

Woman wearing a kilt and standing next to A 3m high lewis chessmen sculpture

The Isle of Lewis wasn’t always my home
But I think it was always meant to be… my destiny
My name is Esther Ruth Cornelia Williams
I am an incomer, being woven into the Island fabric
Click Clack goes the shuttle of the weaver’s loom
God has a plan, He is the author of my story
In 2000, long before I knew anything about the famous Orb Cloth,
For my wedding in December,
I chose a white winter woollen Harris Tweed suit
In a small boutique in Maastricht, city of my birth, The Netherlands
With my Dutch husband, I lived in Germany, Frankfurt
We moved to the UK in 2006, to Scotland in 2014
Homecoming to Lewis in 2019 2022 my late husband’s journey’s end
For me a new beginning

As a tour guide, besides talking about the many layers of history of the island, I want to share with you impressions of a remote rural island life style, knowledge that I gathered from the University Of Life – by working in the Spar petrol station shop at the heart of the community; by exploring and discovering places of great beauty on my Triumph Street Triple Motor Bike; by participating in art workshops and all sorts of cultural events; by creating Harris Tweed products (I studied fashion design in the Netherlands); and through fellowship within my wonderful church family. One day away from this Treasure Island makes me homesick: it is my home.
